Jasmine and Martin ~ A Day in the Lakes

Cartmel, Windermere, Tarn Hows, Consiton Water, Little Langdale, Great Langdale

It is becoming a Chinese tradition to have a pre-wedding location shoot, then show the photographs during the wedding day. It is similar to an engagement shoot, though the bride and groom dress up as if for their wedding. Jasmine and Martin had a slight variation in that they got married last year. This location shoot in the Lake District isn't an engamgement photoghraphy session so much as an anniversary shoot, the photos being shown at their anniversary party later in the year.

I booked Jasmine's hair dressing and make up session here in Grange then we set off for a grand tour. It is the first Day in the Lakes session I've done, so quite excited. I'd been around all my intended venues a couple of weeks before so that we didn't waste time on location, but knew I had more favourite places than one day would allow!

The first stop was in Cartmel. Although it is on the tourist trail, most people don't know it exists. A beautiful limestone village often described as a Costwald village in the Lake District. The village is dominated by Cartmel Priory and the race course, and provides a beautiful backdrop for engagement photography.

Stop two on the shores of Lake Windermere where a grand old tree has fallen into the lake side creating a dramatic setting for wedding photographs. It is the kind of drama I enjoy in landscape photography and knew it would work well with a happy couple sat in the roots.

From there we went on to Tarn Hows - one of the honey pot locations in the lake district. Jasmine had brought a long a lovely picnic and was keen for me to try her Chinese food... which was lovely :~) It was also chance to sit around and chat, a break from being on-camera! My thanks to the family playing croquete for setting up a unique wedding shot.

The north end of Coniston Water has a convenient car park, woodland walk and jetty. The light here was very nice, sunlit background but shading in the trees with wonderful reflected light on Jasmine and Martin - very romantic lighting and location. Plus the cool lake on a hot day - which proved irresistable! I wasn't expecting this to turn into a 'trash the dress' wedding photography shoot :~) Great fun and popular with everyone around.

Cathedral Quarry and the SlatersBridge in Little Langdale are easily missed, but well worth seeking out. The quarry provided a very different backdrop for our photos plus some welcome shade. I love the green light at the entrance and exit. Slaters Bridge is just a few minutes further along the path and a real fave location. I have photographed it at different times of year and yet to be disappointed. Approaching rain provided a subtle background for the later photographs.

Blea Tarn - one of the Lake District's iconic views with Harrison Stickle and Pike'o'Stickle looming in the background, reflecting in the water. A short walk from the National Trust car park and an engagement photography location not to be missed! From there we moved on to the edge of the valley overlooking Great Langdale before heading down to the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub for a well earned pint.
